The powerful magnetic field of the MRI scanner can be disturbed by metal objects during the scan. You may not be able to have an MRI scan if you have:
- Pacemaker or ICD device
- Metal clip in the brain
- Implanted devices such as ear implants and insulin pumps
- Electronic stimulators that cannot be removed or disconnected
- Metal splinters in eyes or body
- Dentures with magnetic pressure lock
- More than 4 stents
- Artificial metal heart flap
- Artificial sphincters
The general practitioner, in consultation with you, will fill out a metal form (control form) which, together with the referral, forms the basis of whether you can be scanned.
