Evaluation for Suspected Asthma

Asthma can be allergic or non-allergic, and in many cases, it may be a combination of both. Respiratory symptoms can also have causes other than asthma. That is why it is important to have your symptoms evaluated to determine the underlying cause.

During an asthma evaluation, the specialist will review your overall symptoms and medical history. The evaluation may consist of several different parts, depending on your symptoms and previous tests.

The purpose is to determine whether the symptoms are caused by asthma and to establish a basis for further treatment.

Before the study

Generally speaking, no special preparations are needed. You may eat and drink as usual and take your regular medication, unless you have been told otherwise.

Please bring an up-to-date list of your medications or your medications in their original packaging.

If you are scheduled for a lung function test, there may be special precautions regarding inhaled medications. You will be notified before the test if you need to stop taking your medication.

If you have a cold or a respiratory infection on the day of your appointment, you should contact Capio before your visit, as this may affect the results of a lung function test. You must also inform the staff if you are pregnant or might be pregnant.

During the study

The consultation typically begins with a discussion of your symptoms, your medical history, and any previous tests. The specialist will also perform a clinical examination.

A lung function test, also known as spirometry, is usually part of the evaluation. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, you may also need, for example, an oxygen saturation test, blood tests, a chest X-ray, or allergy testing.

The specialist will keep you informed about the tests as they are being performed and will review the results with you. The length of the visit depends on which tests are scheduled.

After the study

As a general rule, you can go home immediately after the exam, and there are usually no special precautions or restrictions afterward.

The specialist will review the results with you and explain the next steps. If further tests are needed, this will be discussed with you.

Asthma Treatment

If the evaluation shows that you have asthma, your treatment will be tailored to your type of asthma and the severity of your symptoms.

The goal of the evaluation is therefore not only to make the correct diagnosis, but also to establish a basis for treatment tailored to your symptoms and test results. The specialist will review the treatment plan and the next steps with you.
