Highly specialized anesthesia and pain management

Our anesthesiology specialists deal with anesthesia delivery (anesthesia), perioperative medicine (medical monitoring during surgery) and pain management.

Before any surgery, you will be informed about the anesthesia by the anesthesiologist in charge. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have, and the anesthesiologist will also ensure proper pain management after the surgery.

We look after you every step of the way

At Capio Private Hospital, we know that for some people, going under general anesthesia can be a daunting or anxiety-provoking experience. For others, it's uncomfortable to think about being awake during surgery if they're under local anesthesia. Either way, our experienced team of specialized anaesthesiologists and nurse anaesthetists are ready to provide you with safe and professional care. This way, you can rest assured that you are in safe hands before, during and after your surgery at one of Capio Privathospital's departments.

Information about anesthesia

Local anesthesia

What is local anesthesia?

Local anesthesia means that only a small part of the body is anesthetized. The brain is not affected and you are fully conscious. This type of anesthesia is also known as local anesthesia.

The local anesthetic works by stopping the pain impulses in both small and large nerve pathways before they reach the brain, thereby stopping the perception of pain from a limited part of the body. It is possible to anesthetize the desired area with either an ointment or an injection.

Advantages

Local anesthesia has virtually no side effects and is therefore preferable to general anesthesia if possible. Local anesthesia is often used for minor surgical procedures, such as surgeries on the arms, legs and shoulders.

Disadvantages

As the patient is conscious, local anesthesia cannot be used for major surgery. Therefore, the anesthesiologist only administers local anesthesia for minor surgical procedures.

Spinal anesthesia

In a spinal anesthetic, the doctor injects local anesthetic medication into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. This blocks signals from the nerves and numbs the lower part of the body. There are two types of spinal anesthesia: spinal or epidural.

The medication is administered through a thin (1mm) plastic tube. You lie on your side with your legs bent while the anesthesiologist injects the medicine. First, your skin is cleaned with alcohol and the doctor applies a local anesthetic to the skin. This ensures that it doesn't hurt when the actual back anesthesia is administered.

The back anesthesia starts working after 10-20 minutes. You'll be awake with this type of anesthesia, but you can be given some relaxing medication to help you sleep if you wish. Together with your anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist, you'll find out what works best for you.

After surgery, painkillers can be administered through an epidural catheter. The catheter is inserted into the back as the anesthesiologist applies the local anesthetic to the back. A pump continuously delivers a fixed amount of pain medication through the catheter. This pain management is used for major surgery in the first few days after surgery. This avoids side effects such as nausea and vomiting when using large amounts of morphine-like drugs.

General anesthesia

General anesthesia is also referred to as general anesthesia or general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, the patient is not awake but asleep. Therefore, the patient will not experience or be present during the surgery. The anesthetic is administered by an anesthesiologist injecting sleeping medication through a thin needle inserted into a vein on the back of the hand.

Advantages

When surgery is performed under general anesthesia, all patients (unless they are allergic to the anesthesia) can be operated on - even people with severe anxiety or mental disorders will calm down under general anesthesia. General anesthesia allows the surgeon to perform procedures on multiple parts of the body at the same time. The amount of anesthesia can be easily adjusted on the fly, which is especially beneficial if the surgery takes longer than expected.

Disadvantages

The risk of serious complications is very low, but there is still some risk associated with surgery under general anesthesia. For some patients, waking up after surgery can be associated with nausea, vomiting, throat irritation, headache, tremors and mental impairment. These are normal side effects that patients may experience after general anesthesia - however, the symptoms usually disappear relatively quickly.

Awakening

After surgery, all patients are monitored by specially trained nurses.

At Capio, we follow the scientific societies' criteria for when patients should no longer be under intensive monitoring. All our equipment and furnishings fully comply with the highest standards for monitoring newly operated patients.

Anesthesia and recovery processes are recorded for each patient in the Danish Anesthesia Database (DAD), which has been mandatory since 2007.

Fasteners

Food and drink

The stomach must be empty during anesthesia, otherwise there is a risk of stomach contents entering the lungs. This applies to both general and local anesthesia.

  • You can't eat anything six hours before you go to the hospital - this includes fruit, crisps, sweets, dairy products, juices, etc.
  • You can drink water, juice, coffee and tea without dairy products until two hours before your hospital appointment
  • However, your usual and necessary medication should be taken with as little water as possible on the morning of the day of surgery

Pediatric anesthesia (anesthesia for children)

If your child undergoes surgery with us, you will always be met by highly specialized and experienced anesthesia staff who guarantee a safe and secure anesthesia.

On this page you can read much more about pediatric anesthesia.

Back surgery at Capio

I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.

Hip replacement surgery

I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13th at Capio Aalborg and despite the circumstances, I had a good stay where I got answers to all my questions. I met a staff with great competence and empathy, so I can only give my best recommendations.
Thank you very much for everything.

Thanks to Capio

Thank you to Capio for super good and very competent treatment. They made me feel safe, super skilled at explaining themselves so I could also understand it. A doctor I will never forget, sweet, smiling and with a great sense of humor just to my taste 🤩🥰
