For us, a good pediatric anesthesia means that your child receives a safe and secure treatment, while you as parents feel involved throughout the process. Your child will receive general anesthesia during surgery. This means that the child will be asleep and will not feel pain during the surgical procedure. It is important that you inform us if your child has previously experienced problems/side effects in connection with anesthesia.
When anesthetizing children, it is necessary to take different precautions than when anesthetizing adults. Therefore, you can rest assured that your child will only be anesthetized by highly experienced anesthesia staff at Capio.
We fully understand that having your child under general anesthesia and undergoing surgery can be overwhelming or uncomfortable. Our skilled staff are used to supporting and guiding our patients, and we encourage you to share your thoughts and concerns with us. This gives us the best conditions to provide you with a good experience and treatment.
General anesthesia / general anesthesia
When we operate on children, it is always done under general anesthesia. General anesthesia is also referred to as general anesthesia or general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, the child is not awake but asleep throughout the operation. The child will therefore not experience the surgery itself.
Before administering the anesthetic, it is a good idea to apply Emla patch or Emla cream to the back of the child's hand. This 'magic patch' numbs the skin and the anesthesiologist can then administer the anesthetic without the child feeling any pain. The anesthetic is administered by the anesthesiologist inserting a venflon, a small, thin plastic tube through which the anesthetic is administered, into the back of the hand. Both the Emla patch and Emla cream must be left in place for at least one hour before the venflon can be inserted. Both can be purchased at the pharmacy.
An anesthesiologist and a nurse will talk to you and explain the surgical procedure in more detail. You are welcome in the operating room when your child is being anesthetized. As soon as your child is asleep, wait in our waiting room. You will be with your child again during recovery.
Awakening
After surgery, your child will be transferred to the ward and you will be able to spend time with your child again. Our specialized and experienced staff will monitor your child until you are ready to go home - either the same day or the next day.
Our staff will explain how to deal with any pain and how to change the bandage or dressing. Before you are sent home, the surgeon will inform you about the surgery your child has undergone. You will also be given a chart showing when and how much medication to give your child to ensure that your child does not experience any pain after the surgery. For the first 24 hours after surgery, an adult will need to stay at home with your child.
At Capio, we follow the scientific societies' criteria for when patients should no longer be under intensive monitoring. All our equipment and facilities are fully compliant with the highest standards for monitoring newly operated patients. Anesthesia and recovery processes are registered for each patient in the Danish Anesthesia Database (DAD), which has been mandatory since 2007.
Fasteners
Your child must be fasting. This means that your child should not eat solid food or drink dairy products for at least 6 hours before the anesthesia. This also applies to sweets, candy and chewing gum. Your child may drink a glass of water or juice up to 1 hour before the anesthesia.
What should we say to our child?
It is beneficial for both the child and the staff if the child knows the situation and is familiar with what is going to happen. That's why it's also important that you answer any questions your child may have honestly. In many cases, it is possible to explain to the child that there are some nice doctors and nurses who will put the child to sleep while you parents are with the child. When the child wakes up from surgery, you will also be in the recovery room. The age and maturity of your child will determine what and how much you should tell them prior to surgery.

If you are nervous or uncomfortable with the situation yourself, we recommend that you take special care not to transfer your worries to the child. If you have questions or otherwise need to share your thoughts and concerns, it's best to contact your local department for a reassuring and clarifying talk. Of course, on the day of surgery, you can also ask the anesthesia staff any questions you or your child may have. But here you should be aware of whether your child overhears the conversation.
