What is stress?

Stress is a natural bodily reaction that occurs when we feel pressure or are overwhelmed. For short periods of time, stress can be helpful because it makes us more focused and proactive.

If the stress persists over a long period of time, it can affect both your physical and mental health. Among other things, prolonged stress can lead to fatigue, sleep problems, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms of stress

Stress can manifest itself in many different ways and affects both the body and the mind.

Typical symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Sleep problems
  • Inner restlessness or tension
  • Heart palpitations or chest tightness
  • Difficulty with memory and concentration
  • Irritability or a short temper
  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday life
  • Depression or emotional vulnerability
  • Stomach problems or tension in the body
  • Social withdrawal
  • A feeling of constant time pressure or inadequacy

What is a stress reaction?

A stress reaction is a psychological response to one or more stressful life events. It occurs when demands or stressors exceed the resources currently available to a person.

It is a common and understandable reaction to being overwhelmed.

A stress reaction can be triggered by, among other things:

  • Long-term work pressure
  • Divorce or death
  • Serious illness affecting oneself or a family member
  • Conflicts or major life changes
