The purpose of screening and examining moles is to determine whether they are benign or whether further examination or removal is necessary.

Based on the information you provide and the dermatologist’s examination, the type of mole will be assessed. In many cases, moles can be removed during the same visit, if desired. If the mole is conspicuous or there is suspicion of precancerous changes, removal will be offered immediately or a referral for further treatment will be provided.

The results of the microscopic examination are usually available after about 14 days and can be accessed electronically. If the results indicate a need for further testing or treatment, we will assist you in taking the next steps.

Course of treatment

The consultation includes an evaluation of the mole, including your own observations of changes in shape, color, or size, as well as any symptoms such as itching, pain, or ulceration.

Information is also collected regarding past and current medical conditions, medication use, allergies, and a family history of skin diseases.

The dermatologist will then conduct a thorough examination of the skin and moles using a dermatoscope. Based on this assessment, the next steps will be planned, including possible removal.

Precautions after removal

Moles are removed under local anesthesia and the procedure is usually painless.
After the procedure, you may experience mild pain, which can be treated with over-the-counter medications containing acetaminophen. Medications containing acetylsalicylic acid should be avoided due to an increased risk of bleeding.
It is important to keep the wound clean and follow the dressing instructions. You may experience slight bleeding, swelling, and discoloration in the days following the procedure. The stitches will be removed at a scheduled appointment.
To ensure the scar heals well, it is recommended that you protect the area from sunlight and use sunscreen for about a year.

You can usually resume your normal daily activities, but you should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and vigorous stretching or twisting of the area until the stitches are removed. You may take a shower the day after the procedure, but you should avoid baths, swimming pools, and seawater until the wound has healed.
