Dermatology – all treatments

What symptoms can a wart evaluation help with?

Warts are caused by a viral infection of the skin with HPV and are generally harmless—but they can be bothersome, tender, and difficult to get rid of. Below are some of the most common symptoms that lead patients to schedule an evaluation with a dermatologist at Capio.

If you're unsure whether your symptoms fit the description, you're always welcome to contact us.

Warts on the Hands and Fingers

Rough, thickened bumps on the fingers, the backs of the hands, or around the nails. The dermatologist examines the skin lesion with a dermatoscope, confirms the diagnosis, and determines whether freezing or scraping is the appropriate treatment.

Plantar warts that make it painful to walk

Warts on the sole of the foot are pressed into the skin and can cause a throbbing pain with every step. The thickened skin can be scraped off (curettage) so that the wart can be examined and treated.

Warts that spread

If you’ve developed more warts, or if they’re spreading to new areas of your body, it may be a good idea to have them evaluated. The dermatologist will review your history with you and recommend the next steps for treatment.

Painful or bothersome warts

Warts that are located in areas subject to pressure or friction—such as on the feet, fingertips, or near the nails—can become tender, crack, and bleed. In these cases, treatment can relieve the discomfort.

Warts That Don't Go Away on Their Own

Many warts go away on their own over time, but this can take a long time. If the wart has been there for months without changing, or if over-the-counter products haven't worked, professional treatment may be appropriate.

Warts That Have Come Back

Warts can recur, and a single treatment is often not enough. The dermatologist will assess what treatments have been tried so far and determine which approach makes the most sense in your case.

Uncertainty about the nature of the skin lesion

Not all rough or hard bumps on the skin are warts. If you’re unsure of the diagnosis, a dermatologist will examine the lesion with a dermatoscope to determine what it is.

Warts in Children and Adolescents

Warts are very common in children and adolescents and are easily spread—for example, at swimming pools and in locker rooms. We assess whether the warts should be treated now or whether it makes more sense to monitor them.

Evaluation and Treatment of Warts

Common warts are caused by a viral infection of the skin with the human papillomavirus (HPV). They often appear on the hands and feet, but can also occur elsewhere on the body. Warts are generally harmless and often go away on their own, but this can take a long time.

Treatment may be appropriate if the wart is bothersome, tender, spreading, or does not go away. It may also be appropriate to have a skin lesion evaluated if you are unsure whether it is actually a wart.

At Capio, the dermatologist first evaluates the skin lesion and determines whether treatment is necessary and which method is most appropriate.

Course of treatment

Before treatment

During the initial examination, the dermatologist will talk with you about the skin lesion, how long you’ve had it, any symptoms you may be experiencing, and any previous treatment.

The dermatologist examines the wart and, as part of the evaluation, may use a dermatoscope, which allows for a more detailed view of the skin’s structures. Based on this, the dermatologist determines whether the skin lesion is consistent with a common wart and whether it can be treated as planned.

During treatment

If the dermatologist determines that treatment is appropriate, the initial treatment may involve freezing, also known as cryotherapy, and/or scraping, also known as curettage.

In cryotherapy, the wart is frozen to affect the tissue where the wart virus is present. The treatment may cause a stinging sensation or pain during and after the freezing process.

During a scraping procedure, part of the thickened tissue is mechanically removed. The choice of treatment depends, among other things, on the wart’s appearance, location, and the dermatologist’s assessment.

After the treatment

After the first treatment, you will receive a diagnosis and a recommendation for the next steps.

A single treatment is not always enough to make a wart disappear. With cryotherapy, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment. The dermatologist will therefore assess whether further treatment, self-treatment, or follow-up is needed.

Impact and expected results

There are several ways to treat warts, but no treatment can guarantee that the wart will disappear after the first treatment. Warts can also come back.

The purpose of the consultation is therefore both to evaluate the skin lesion and to initiate appropriate initial treatment when warranted.

When should a skin lesion be evaluated?

It’s a good idea to have a skin lesion examined if you’re unsure whether it’s a wart. This is especially true if the lesion is growing rapidly, bleeding heavily, or otherwise changing significantly.

A dermatologist can determine whether it is a common wart or whether the skin lesion requires a different type of examination or treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Warts and Their Treatment

How can I tell if a skin lesion is a wart?

Common warts are often small, firm skin lesions with a dry or uneven surface. However, their appearance can vary depending on where on the body they are located. If you are unsure, a dermatologist can examine the lesion and, if necessary, use a dermatoscope to examine the skin’s structures in greater detail.

When should I have a wart examined by a dermatologist?

It may be a good idea to have a wart examined if it is tender, bothersome, spreading, or does not go away. You should also have a skin lesion examined if you are unsure whether it is a wart, or if it is growing rapidly, bleeding heavily, or changing significantly.

How are warts treated at Capio?

The dermatologist will first examine the skin lesion and ask, among other things, how long you’ve had it, what symptoms you’re experiencing, and whether you’ve had any previous treatment. If treatment is deemed appropriate, the initial treatment may consist of freezing with cryotherapy and/or scraping with curettage. The method is chosen based on factors such as the wart’s appearance and location.

Does it hurt when a wart freezes?

Freezing a wart may sting or hurt during and after the treatment. The experience varies from person to person and may depend, among other things, on the wart’s location and size. Your dermatologist will explain the treatment and what to expect afterward.

Is one treatment enough to remove a wart?

A single treatment is not always sufficient, and no treatment can guarantee that the wart will disappear after the first attempt. Cryotherapy may therefore need to be repeated, and warts may also recur. After the treatment, the dermatologist will assess whether further treatment, self-care, or follow-up is needed.

Are warts contagious, and how can I avoid spreading them?

Warts are caused by a viral infection of the skin and can be spread through direct contact, via objects, or from one part of the body to another. You can limit the spread of the infection by avoiding picking at the wart, covering it with a bandage, and wearing shower shoes in shared wet areas such as swimming pools and locker rooms.
