High-resolution images of the brain without the use of X-rays
An MRI scan of the brain uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the brain’s structures. The test can reveal changes that are not always visible on other imaging tests.
MRI scans are used, among other things, to diagnose headaches, dizziness, epilepsy, neurological symptoms, suspected blood clots, multiple sclerosis, or brain tumors. The referring physician always determines which test is appropriate.
If necessary to obtain the best possible images, the exam may be supplemented with a contrast agent, which is administered through a vein.
