Detailed images of the structures of the spine
An MRI scan of the back is an advanced diagnostic imaging test that provides detailed images of the bones, intervertebral discs, nerves, spinal cord, and soft tissues. The test does not use X-rays, but rather a powerful magnetic field and radio waves.
MRI scans are used, among other things, to diagnose:
- chronic back pain
- herniated disc
- pain that radiates to the arms or legs
- sensory disturbances or tingling
- suspected narrowing of the spinal canal
- degenerative changes in the back
- other diseases or changes in the spine
The referring physician always determines whether an MRI scan is the most appropriate test.
