Ultrasound scan for abdominal aortic stenosis

An abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as abdominal aortic aneurysm, is a life-threatening condition where the main artery in the abdomen widens and is at risk of rupturing.
At Capio Private Hospital, we offer ultrasound scanning in a safe environment with a focus on early detection of the condition so it can be treated before it develops into something serious.

Why get an ultrasound scan of the main abdominal artery?

Abdominal aortic aneurysm, a bulging of the abdominal aorta, affects around 2-5% of men over the age of 65. The condition develops slowly and often without symptoms, making it difficult to detect.

Smoking, high blood pressure and hereditary factors increase the risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Therefore, it is recommended that siblings and children of a person with an aortic aneurysm have an ultrasound scan at age 50 and again at age 65.

At Capio, we offer ultrasound scanning as an effective and gentle method to detect potential abdominal aortic aneurysms. Using ultrasound, we can assess whether the abdominal aorta is enlarged and measure the largest cross-sectional diameter, which is crucial to determine the risk of the bulge rupturing.

You will be offered an appointment for an ultrasound scan

You will be offered an appointment for an ultrasound scan, which will be performed by one of our experienced radiologists.

Ultrasound scan of the abdomen

The scan involves a radiologist using an ultrasound probe to take images of the aorta. It's a quick and painless procedure that usually takes around 15-30 minutes. The scan has no side effects.

After the scan

If the scan shows no signs of an aneurysm, the procedure is terminated. If we do find an aneurysm, your GP will receive results for follow-up. Treatment depends on the size of the aneurysm and may require either surgery or regular check-ups to monitor progress. The radiologist will prepare a medical record and you will receive the results of the scan within 10-12 business days.

Possibility to use your health insurance at Capio

If we can perform the supplementary examinations at Capio, it is possible for you to activate your health insurance and continue your program with us. Otherwise, we will we will refer you to the public sector.

Information about abdominal aortic aneurysm

What is abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition in which part of the aorta, the body's largest blood vessel, expands abnormally. The aorta carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body and its walls are normally strong and elastic. But when the aortic wall weakens, it can't withstand the pressure exerted by the blood, which can lead to a bulge or dilation of the blood vessel. This bulge can vary in size and location, but is typically found in the abdominal region.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm usually develops slowly over many years and rarely causes symptoms until it reaches a dangerous size. Because of this, the condition is often only discovered when tests are performed for other conditions or when the aneurysm is close to rupture, which can cause sudden, severe pain in the abdomen, back or chest. If the aneurysm ruptures, it causes life-threatening internal bleeding that requires immediate medical treatment.

It is therefore crucial to identify and monitor abdominal aortic aneurysms early to reduce the risk of rupture.

Who is at risk of developing abdominal aortic aneurysm?

The risk of developing abdominal aortic aneurysm increases with age and particularly affects men over 65. Other risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis and a family predisposition to aneurysms. Women can also develop the condition, but it is less common. In addition, people with certain inherited connective tissue disorders, such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, are also at higher risk of developing an aneurysm.

How is abdominal aortic aneurysm detected?

The most common method of detecting an aneurysm is an ultrasound scan, which is quick, painless and very accurate. If an aneurysm is detected, treatment will depend on its size and risk of rupture. Small aneurysms can be monitored with regular scans, while larger aneurysms or those showing signs of rapid growth may require surgical intervention.
