The screening reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill with cervical cancer, which in its early stages does not cause any symptoms. Pap smears are not cancer, but they can develop into cancer if left untreated. The changes are caused by chronic infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted disease that causes no symptoms.

We perform colposcopies

If a cervical smear test shows or suspects cervical cancer, further examination is needed in the form of a colposcopy (a binocular examination), where the gynecologist takes tissue samples. About colposcopy

Before the colposcopy

You may take 2 tablets of ibuprofen (Ibumetin, Burana, Ipren) 200 mg approx. 1 hour before the examination to reduce discomfort during the test. You must not be menstruating on the day of the examination.

The colposcopy itself

The examination is similar to a normal gynecological examination. The gynecologist examines the surface of the cervix using a binocular instrument (colposcope). A weak vinegar solution is applied to make it easier to see the changes. Tissue samples (portiobiopsies) and a small scraping (cervical scraping) are then taken from the cervix. The examination takes 10-15 minutes and you can usually go back to work immediately afterwards. Sometimes a gauze strip is inserted, which you will need to remove yourself later in the day by gently pulling the visible snip.
