The Purpose of the Cone Biopsy

The purpose of a cone biopsy is to remove the abnormal cells detected on the cervix. The procedure is performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the treatment plan developed for you.

Practical Information

A cone biopsy typically takes about 15 minutes and can be performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the plan developed for you. If you receive general anesthesia, you must arrange your own transportation home and must not drive for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Before you are discharged, you will receive information about how the surgery went and the precautions you need to take after the procedure. In most cases, the results of the tissue samples are available after 8–10 days, and before discharge, arrangements will be made regarding how you will receive the results.

Before surgery

Before the surgery, it is important that you follow the preparation instructions you have been given. If you are scheduled to receive general anesthesia, you must arrive on an empty stomach on the day of the surgery. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, you must follow the prescribed medication schedule. We also recommend that you have pain relievers containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen at home before the surgery. If you develop a fever, catch a cold, or have an infection in the days leading up to the surgery, you should contact the hospital as soon as possible.

During the operation

The conization procedure is performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the plan developed for you. The procedure itself typically lasts about 15 minutes. On the day of surgery, you will meet with a nurse who will explain the procedure and prepare you for surgery, the surgeon who will perform the procedure, and—if you are having general anesthesia—an anesthesiologist who will explain the anesthesia process to you.

After surgery

After the surgery, the recovery process depends on the type of anesthesia you received. If you had local anesthesia, you can usually be discharged about 30 minutes after the procedure. If you were under general anesthesia, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, after which you will be offered food and drink. Before you are discharged, you will receive information about how the surgery went and the precautions you need to take afterward.
