The purpose of the surgery

A hysteroscopic procedure (hysteroscopy) is performed to examine the uterine cavity and identify or treat the cause of your symptoms. During the procedure, a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus, allowing the surgeon to view the uterine cavity on a monitor. If any abnormalities are found in the uterine cavity, they can be removed during the procedure. The tissue that is removed is then sent for microscopic examination.

Practical Information

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the duration depends on the extent of the procedure. After the procedure, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, and most patients can be discharged 3–4 hours after surgery. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation home and must not drive for the first 24 hours after general anesthesia. If tissue samples were taken during the surgery, arrangements will be made before discharge regarding how you will receive the test results. The turnaround time varies, but is usually 8–10 days.

Before surgery

Before the surgery, it is important that you follow the preparation instructions you have been given. We recommend that you bring loose-fitting clothing, arrange for an adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours after the surgery, and have pain relievers containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen at home. On the day of surgery, you should take a shower and wash your hair, avoid applying body lotion to the surgical area, and refrain from wearing jewelry or contact lenses.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, a laparoscope is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus so that the surgeon can examine the uterine cavity.
