The purpose of the surgery

The purpose of the surgery is to relieve you of the symptoms caused by cysts on one or both ovaries. The surgery is performed as laparoscopic surgery, in which 3–4 small incisions are made in the abdomen so that the surgeon can examine and treat the area. The cysts can either be removed while preserving most of the ovary, or it may be necessary to remove the entire ovary. If tissue is removed during the surgery, it is subsequently sent for microscopic examination.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the duration depends on the extent of the procedure. After the surgery, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, and most patients can be discharged 3–6 hours after the surgery. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation home and must not drive for the first 24 hours after general anesthesia. If tissue samples were taken during the surgery, arrangements will be made before discharge regarding how you will receive the test results. The turnaround time varies but is usually 8–10 days.

The course of the surgery

Before surgery

Before the surgery, it is important that you follow the preparation instructions you have been given. We recommend that you arrange for an adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours after the surgery and that you have pain relievers containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen at home. On the day of surgery, you should take a shower, wash your hair, and thoroughly clean your navel with soap. Avoid applying body lotion to the skin in the surgical area, and do not wear jewelry or contact lenses.

During the operation

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, 3–4 small incisions are made in the abdomen, through which the surgeon inserts a laparoscope and other instruments. To provide a clear view and create space during the surgery, carbon dioxide is inflated into the abdominal cavity. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the cyst may be removed while preserving most of the ovary, or it may be necessary to remove the entire ovary. In rare cases, it may be necessary to switch from laparoscopic surgery to open surgery.

After surgery

After the surgery, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, and you will be offered food and drink. Before you are discharged, you will be informed about how the surgery went and the precautions you need to take afterward. Most patients can be discharged 3–6 hours after surgery, but you must arrange your own transportation home and are not allowed to drive for the first 24 hours after general anesthesia.
