The purpose of the surgery

Laparoscopic surgery in the lower abdomen (diagnostic laparoscopy) is performed to determine the cause of your lower abdominal symptoms and, at the same time, treat any abnormalities. During the procedure, a laparoscope and other instruments are inserted through 3–4 small incisions in the abdomen so that the surgeon can examine the abdominal cavity. If tissue samples are taken during the procedure, they are subsequently sent for microscopic examination.

Practical Information

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the duration depends on the extent of the procedure. After the surgery, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, and most patients can be discharged 3–6 hours after the surgery. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation home and must not drive for the first 24 hours after general anesthesia. If tissue samples were taken during the surgery, arrangements will be made before discharge regarding how you will receive the test results. The turnaround time varies but is usually 8–10 days.

The course of the surgery

Before surgery

Before the surgery, it is important that you follow the preparation instructions you have been given. We recommend that you arrange for an adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours after the surgery and that you have pain relievers containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen at home. On the day of surgery, you should take a shower, wash your hair, and thoroughly clean your navel with soap. Avoid applying body lotion to the skin in the surgical area, and do not wear jewelry or contact lenses.

During the operation

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, 3–4 small incisions are made in the abdomen, through which the surgeon inserts a laparoscope and other instruments to examine the abdominal cavity. To provide a clear view and create space during the surgery, carbon dioxide is inflated into the abdominal cavity. The extent of the surgery depends on what the surgeon finds during the procedure, and any tissue that is removed is subsequently sent for microscopic examination.

After surgery

After the surgery, you will be monitored until you are sufficiently awake, and you will be offered food and drink. Before you are discharged, you will be informed about how the surgery went and the precautions you need to take afterward. Most patients can be discharged 3–6 hours after surgery, but you must arrange your own transportation home and are not allowed to drive for the first 24 hours after general anesthesia.
