What can an echocardiogram show?

An echocardiogram allows the doctor to assess the size and pumping function of the heart and to examine how the heart valves are functioning. The test can also be used to detect or rule out changes in the heart’s structure, assess blood flow, and check for fluid around the heart.

How the examination is conducted

During the exam, you will lie on an examination table while the doctor moves an ultrasound transducer over your chest. Gel is applied to your skin to ensure good contact between the transducer and your skin. The exam is painless and typically lasts 20–30 minutes.
