Abdominal and intestinal surgery – all treatments

We specialize in gastrointestinal surgery

A hernia is a bulge through the abdominal wall that appears as a bulge when you cough, stand upright or push your stomach out. In some cases, hernias will be uncomfortable and sting before they become visible. Hernias rarely disappear over time, but will often grow and cause increasing discomfort. Hernias therefore require surgery,

  • if it cannot be pushed back
  • if it is problematic in relation to daily tasks
  • if it is causing pronounced cosmetic discomfort
  • if it causes discomfort and pain

Keyhole surgery

Hernia surgery

At Capio, we offer surgery for three different types of hernias: umbilical hernia, inguinal hernia and abdominal wall hernia. Hernias can be operated on using a telescopic technique rather than open surgery, although in some cases open surgery is the only and/or best option.

Open surgery or telescopic surgery

With telescopic surgery, there is less chronic discomfort after surgery and the risk of hernia recurrence is lower than with traditional open surgery. In many cases, the pain is also less, so you can quickly get back to your normal activities. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts 1 hour. Once you have been anesthetized, 3 small telescopic tubes are inserted through the abdominal wall into the abdominal cavity. The tubes have a diameter of ½-1 cm and this is where the surgery is performed.

In a telescopic operation, a plastic mesh is inserted over the defect on the inside of the abdominal wall, whereas in an open operation, the mesh is placed on the outside of the defect. The mesh is placed behind the peritoneum and does not come into contact with the intestines. Open hernia surgery is performed through an incision in the abdomen, after which the hernia is inserted back into the abdominal cavity.

Types of hernias

Inguinal hernia

An inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia and appears as a bulge in the peritoneum. The bulge may contain fatty tissue, fluid and/or bowel.

There are several explanations for the development of inguinal hernias, and they can be congenital or develop later in life. If inguinal hernia is congenital, it does not necessarily occur from birth, but is formed at an early stage in life. If the patient develops a hernia later in life, it is caused by increased pressure in the abdominal cavity, such as heavy lifting or chronic bronchitis.

It is possible to operate on inguinal hernias either through a scope or open surgery. Our skilled surgeons will help you find the right treatment for you.

Abdominal wall hernia

Abdominal wall hernias occur when the peritoneum and part of the intestine come out through the abdominal wall. In most cases, a small hernia will not cause any discomfort, while a larger hernia can result in pain and discomfort. When a patient develops an abdominal wall hernia, it can be caused by a previous surgery or weak muscles, among other things.

It is possible to undergo surgery either through a scope or open surgery. Our skilled surgeons will help you find the right treatment.

Umbilical hernia

Umbilical hernias occur when an area of the abdominal wall around the navel weakens. This inner abdominal wall is thin and the muscles do not have the ability to adequately protect the area. As a result, a hernia sac forms under the skin, which will later be visible as a bulge on the abdomen.

The vast majority of people with umbilical hernias do not experience any discomfort or pain. If the umbilical hernia becomes increasingly painful, red or hard, it's important to seek medical attention quickly. Especially if symptoms are followed by nausea and vomiting. The risk of having an umbilical hernia is that a small part of the intestine can become trapped in the hernia, resulting in an incarcerated hernia with bowel obstruction. This is a rare but serious condition that requires emergency surgery.

However, the vast majority of umbilical hernia cases are not acute, but still pose a nuisance and potential risk to the patient. Our skilled surgeons are ready to guide you on whether surgery is the right option for your case, and if so, whether it should be a surgical procedure or open surgery.
