What is an ENG test?
ENG stands for electroneurography and is a test of the nerves’ ability to conduct electrical signals. During the test, selected nerves are stimulated with small electrical impulses, while electrodes placed on the skin measure how quickly and how strongly the signals are conducted through the nerve.
A nerve conduction study can be used, among other things, to:
- to investigate how electrical signals are transmitted through the nerves
- detect or assess injuries or diseases of the peripheral nerves
- determine whether a nerve is pinched or otherwise affected
- assess the severity and extent of nerve damage
Depending on your symptoms and the nature of the examination, ENG may be supplemented with other neurophysiological tests, such as EMG. You will be informed about which tests are relevant in your case.
