Children’s adenoids can become so enlarged that they cause discomfort in daily life. Surgery may be recommended if the child has persistent nasal congestion, snores, breathes through the mouth, or experiences pauses in breathing during sleep. Enlarged adenoids in children can also lead to recurrent middle ear infections or fluid buildup in the middle ear because they block the Eustachian tube. The purpose of the surgery is to improve breathing and reduce these symptoms.
Enlarged adenoids in children can cause, among other things, a stuffy nose, snoring, restlessness during sleep, and difficulty breathing. Some children also experience recurrent middle ear infections or hearing loss due to fluid in the middle ear. If the symptoms affect the child’s well-being or development, surgery may be the best solution.
Before surgery
Before the surgery, your child will be examined by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, who will determine whether removal of the adenoids is the appropriate treatment. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so your child must arrive having fasted according to the guidelines provided in the appointment notice. It is important that your child is healthy on the day of surgery. If your child has a fever, a cold, or any other infection, please contact the hospital, as it may be necessary to postpone the surgery.
During the operation
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts 30–50 minutes, depending on the extent of the procedure. The surgeon removes the child’s adenoids through the mouth, so there are no visible scars. If the placement of ear tubes is also scheduled, this is performed under the same anesthesia. Once the surgery is complete, the child is monitored in the recovery room until they are ready to go home.
After surgery
Most children can go home the same day. It is normal for the child to have a mild sore throat, slightly bad breath, or mild pain during the first few days after surgery. As a general rule, the child should stay home from school or daycare for about four days after surgery. During this time, the child should take it easy and avoid rough play and sports to reduce the risk of bleeding and infection. You will receive instructions on pain management, diet, and signs of complications before you go home.
Back surgery at Capio
I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.
Hip replacement surgery
I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13, at Capio Aalborg, and despite the circumstances, I had a pleasant stay during which all my questions were answered. I encountered a staff that was highly competent and empathetic, so I can only give them my highest recommendation.
Thank you very much for everything.
