Removal of tonsils

At Capio, we perform tonsillectomies, which means surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsils). Although the procedure is performed less frequently than in the past, it is still one of the most common surgeries performed - especially in children.

Ear, nose, and throat surgery – all treatments

When should tonsils be removed?

There is a strong consensus among ear, nose and throat specialists in Denmark that recurrent severe tonsillitis, occurring 3-4 times a year for at least two years, is a good reason to recommend tonsillectomy.

The same is true if a person has had tonsillitis one or more times. In cases where the tonsils are so large that they cause breathing and perhaps swallowing problems for the child, surgery is also warranted. In some cases, however, only a partial removal of the tonsils is performed. If a person has been suffering from bad breath for a long period of time due to clogged tonsils, there is also an indication to remove them (most commonly seen in adults).

More rare reasons for surgery

Sleep apnea is a condition where the airways close during sleep. This causes repeated episodes of paused breathing. The condition most commonly affects overweight, middle-aged men and is also discussed as a basis for tonsillectomy. Finally, if throat cancer is suspected, it may be necessary to remove a tonsil for tissue examination (microscopy). tissue examination (microscopy).

Information about the surgery

Are there situations where surgery is not recommended?

There is a reluctance to operate on children who have periodic throat symptoms as part of upper respiratory tract infections. This is usually an infection of the entire pharynx and not just the tonsils. It is also preferable to avoid operating on children younger than 3-4 years. Finally, people with bleeding conditions should not be operated on either.

Precautions leading up to surgery

Avoid all natural medicines, fish oil, vitamin E, glucosamine sulphate, ginger, chia seeds, garlic, ginseng, gingko biloba and Q10 for about 2 weeks before surgery. These preparations can increase bleeding tendencies. One week after surgery, you can take the medication again.

What anesthesia is used for the surgery?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. You will receive further information in your appointment letter.

How does the surgery work?

The tonsils are usually removed completely. However, in some cases, especially in children with oversized tonsils, partial removal may be performed. Often the "polyps" (adenoid vegetations) found in the space behind the nasal cavity are removed during the same procedure.

How quickly will I be discharged?

The procedure is generally performed as an outpatient procedure with same-day discharge. This is based on the experience that it results in better healing and less pain for the patient. You will receive more information about discharge in your appointment letter.

Back surgery at Capio

I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.

Hip replacement surgery

I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13th at Capio Aalborg and despite the circumstances, I had a good stay where I got answers to all my questions. I met a staff with great competence and empathy, so I can only give my best recommendations.
Thank you very much for everything.
