The nasal septum separates the two halves of the nose. With a severely crooked nasal septum, the airway through the nose can be restricted or completely blocked. Symptoms will often include recurring headaches, colds, sinusitis and tonsillitis. Our doctors always perform a preliminary examination to ensure the best treatment plan for you.
A deviated nasal septum can be caused by sports or falls where the nose takes a blow. Another common cause is that the nasal septum has become crooked with age as more cartilage builds up in the nose throughout life.
Precautions before surgery
Avoid all natural remedies, fish oil, vitamin E, glucosamine sulphate, ginger, chia seeds, garlic, ginseng, gingko biloba and Q10, as they can increase bleeding tendencies. One week after surgery, you can take the medication again.
What anesthesia is used for the surgery?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. You will be monitored by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist throughout the surgery. Find more information in the patient information or in your appointment letter.
The surgery itself
The surgery is performed through the nostrils and leaves no visible scars. Inside the nose, the cartilage and bone of the septum is exposed and the septum can be straightened. Often a reduction of the nasal bones is performed at the same time to create more space. Inside the nose (in both nostrils), either Silastic plates or a self-dissolving tampon are placed after surgery. These are placed to support/stabilize the nasal septum for the first 24 hours.
When can I return to my activities?
How long you’ll need to be on sick leave depends on the nature of your work. The surgeon will advise you on the expected duration of your sick leave during the preoperative examination. You may go for short walks, but you should avoid bending forward and lifting heavy objects. You should also avoid any blows to the nose for the first 6 weeks, as well as sports for the first 4 weeks.
