We are leaders in foot and ankle surgery

The foot's delicate and unique construction must be able to absorb the entire weight of the body, which makes it extremely vulnerable. This is why we at Capio Private Hospital see many strain injuries that cause great discomfort to our patients. These include conditions such as heel spurs, bunions, crooked big toes and sunk forefoot. Feet are different and the causes of foot and ankle pain are many.

Therefore, we always offer you a thorough clinical examination, which will be supplemented by the scans we deem relevant in order to create the best possible assessment and treatment plan for your specific problem.

Our goal is to provide you with the most specialized treatment

Foot and ankle surgery is a complex subspecialty within the field of orthopaedic surgery. At Capio Private Hospital, you will only meet highly specialized staff who have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating painful or troublesome conditions in the feet and ankles. This means that you can receive treatment with confidence.

Information about foot and ankle surgery

Ingrown nail

An ingrown or ingrown nail has grown into the soft tissue of the toe next to the nail. The condition often causes pain and can lead to inflammation that needs to be treated with antibiotics. Ingrown nails can be caused by a number of things, including improper nail clipping, wearing inappropriate footwear or as a result of sports injuries. If conservative treatment, such as wearing a brace on the nail, hasn't been effective, surgery may be necessary, where the doctor removes part of the nail to permanently narrow it. Our surgeons will help you find the right treatment.

Achilles tendon injury

Achilles tendon injuries can be caused by a sudden injury where the tendon ruptures completely or partially. In these cases, it's important to see a doctor as soon as possible to assess whether surgery is the right option. The doctor will often perform an ultrasound scan to assess the extent of the injury.

In other cases, pain from the Achilles tendon can be caused by an overload, which is why rest is often effective. Alternatively, splint and brace treatment is an option for multiple Achilles tendon issues.

Heel spur

Heel spurs are one of the most common causes of underfoot pain - especially in women. Heel spurs actually mean bone outgrowths from the heel bone and are more the result of a series of errors or overloads in the foot than an actual diagnosis.

If only the bone growth is treated, it is purely symptom management. Therefore, the symptoms will inevitably return when the treatment is stopped. Therefore, it is important to find the cause of the heel spur to prevent future problems. The heel spur can often be seen on an X-ray, which will show a small growth or tap on the underside of the heel bone.

In addition to orthotics and footwear choices, you may need to treat the inflammation with arthritis medication or an adrenal blockade.

Crooked big toe with bunion (hallux valgus)

A crooked big toe - hallux valgus (dislocation of the big toe) - is a condition where the bone of the big toe shifts in relation to the metatarsal bone. The tip of the big toe begins to point towards the other toes of the foot and a bunion forms at the root of the big toe. The condition can cause hammertoe formation of the little toes and, in severe cases, the big toe can overlap the other toes.

It is only necessary to treat the condition if the patient is experiencing pain. Initially, and for mild pain, you should start by changing the footwear. After that, surgery may be required. Our surgeons will guide you on the right treatment.

Osteoarthritis of the big toe

Osteoarthritis in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe causes the big toe to become stiff, which is known as hallux rigidus (stiff big toe). The stiffness in the big toe is especially noticeable when trying to bend the toe upwards and can make walking or running difficult.

Generally, you will try to alleviate or correct the symptoms by changing your footwear or getting shoe inserts. In cases where the discomfort is so severe that it interferes with your daily life, surgery may be necessary. Our skilled surgeons are ready to guide you in your specific situation.

Flatfoot

Flat feet can either be congenital or occur for a variety of reasons, including the weakening of certain ligaments and tendons in the foot or the collapse of bones in the metatarsal. Patients with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop flat feet. Injuries that damage ligaments or cause severe fractures in the foot can also cause flat feet. In addition, being overweight is a trigger for flat feet, as the load on the foot is inappropriately high.

How to treat
In many cases, it is recommended to first try foot orthotics. If orthotics are not sufficient, surgery may be necessary. In the past, treatment was limited to fairly extensive surgeries that stiffened the foot, but today there are several types of surgery available. Our surgeons will help you assess which treatment is right for you.

Hollow foot

Clubfoot can be congenital or can occur due to problems in the nervous system. Examples of these disorders are Charcot Marie Tooth disease and spastic paralysis. Before surgery, you will have a preliminary examination with a specialist. You will have an X-ray and based on the images, the doctor will choose the surgical technique that is best suited to your case. In some cases, a CT scan of the foot is also needed. In this case, the doctor will order the scan immediately, but there may be a waiting time for the examination.

Hammertoes

Hammertoes in the little toes have many causes. They can be a congenital condition, but in many cases hammertoes are caused by wearing inappropriate footwear. Hammertoes can range from mild to severe cases with stiff and deformed toes.

If you experience pain and walking with roomy footwear is not sufficient, surgery may be an option. The type of surgery we recommend varies depending on the problem you have. Our specialist doctors will help you find the best solution for your specific problem. In some cases, it may be necessary to supplement with other surgeries if it is determined that the cause of the hammertoes is due to another foot problem.

Sunken forefoot

Forefoot drop or forefoot drop is characterized by the disappearance of the arch that runs transversely under the foot, so that the forefoot becomes flat against the ground. This can cause pain when standing, walking and running as the bones of the forefoot are pressed against the ground by the weight of the body.
