Surgery to remove a nerve tumor (neuroma)
Before the surgery, you will be examined by a specialist who will assess your symptoms and examine your foot. If your symptoms are caused by a neuroma and non-surgical treatment has not been effective enough, surgery may be the right solution.
During the surgery, the surgeon removes the thickened nerve through a small incision in the foot. The goal is to relieve the pain and other symptoms caused by the nerve knot. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on what was agreed upon during the preliminary examination.
Most patients experience significant pain relief after the surgery. Since the nerve is removed, sensation between the two toes that the nerve previously innervated will be reduced or lost. The wound usually heals after about eight weeks, after which most patients can gradually return to their normal activities.
