Foot and ankle surgery – all treatments

We offer surgery for ankle instability

Ankle instability typically occurs after repeated sprains in which the ligaments on the outside of the ankle have been damaged. This can make the ankle feel unstable and cause you to twist your foot more easily. Many people also experience pain, swelling, and a loss of confidence in their ankle during daily activities or sports.

Symptoms and treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms. Initially, nonsurgical treatment such as physical therapy, exercises, and possibly an ankle brace will often be recommended. If the ankle remains unstable and the symptoms affect your daily life or activity level, surgery may be the right solution. The purpose of the surgery is to stabilize the ankle joint by repairing or tightening the damaged ligaments, thereby reducing the risk of future sprains and improving the ankle’s function.

Surgery for ankle instability

Before the surgery, you will be examined by a specialist who will assess your symptoms and examine your ankle joint. If your ankle remains unstable even after you have undergone physical therapy or other non-surgical treatment, surgery may be the right solution. During the preoperative evaluation, the surgeon will inform you which surgical procedure is recommended in your case.

During the surgery, the surgeon repairs or tightens the damaged ligaments on the outside of the ankle to restore stability to the joint. The procedure is performed through an incision over the damaged ligaments, and the surgical technique depends on which ligaments are affected. The surgery can be performed under various types of anesthesia, which will be discussed during the preoperative evaluation.

Most patients experience greater ankle stability and fewer instances of twisting their ankle. The final result is not assessed until 6–12 months after surgery. Swelling and tenderness are normal in the initial period following surgery, and a good rehabilitation program is important for achieving the best possible outcome.
