We are experienced in hand surgery

There are many different causes of hand disorders. Pain in the hand can be caused by, among other things, overloading the tendons and causing irritation. Tendon irritation manifests itself as, for example, carpal tunnel syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome and jumper's finger. Similarly, hand pain can be caused by deformities or be the result of damage to tendons, joints, nerves or bones.

Hand disorders are a major inconvenience in daily life

Hand disorders are a major nuisance in everyday life. That's why we at Capio Privathospital are pleased that we can quickly offer you an appointment for professional treatment. Our surgical staff are used to treating a wide range of hand-related problems, and they will always perform a thorough preliminary examination to ensure you get the right treatment.

Springfinger

What is a jumping finger?

Jumper's finger is caused by irritation in the flexor tendons of the fingers. This can cause a narrowing of the tendon sheath, resulting in reduced mobility. In some cases, the tendon can get stuck when trying to bend the finger. Jumper's finger is a very common condition that is most common in older people. The middle and ring fingers are most commonly affected

Cause of jumper's finger

The condition can be caused by irritation and swelling of the flexor tendon of one of the fingers. This causes the tendon to "stick" in the tendon sheath with the finger in a flexed position. It can also be caused by a small benign nodule on the tendon. People with diabetes tend to develop the condition in many fingers - this can lead to multiple surgeries.

Symptoms and symptoms

The following symptoms are common:

  • Minor, tender swelling of the tendon on the front of the base joint of the finger
  • The finger locks in a bent position and is difficult to extend
  • Aches and pains when bending and stretching the fingers
  • Clicking sound when the finger is moved and the tendon passes through the tendon sheath

Treatment

Jumper's finger can be treated with medication (an injection of cortisone, a steoid hormone). If this does not help, a minor surgical procedure may be necessary, which can be performed under local anesthesia. At Capio Private Hospital, you will have a preliminary examination with a specialist before any surgery, where we will agree on the best solution for you. The surgery aims to remove the pain and popping tendency in the finger and consists of cutting a short tunnel at the flexor tendon to make room for the knot.

Driving finger/driving hand (Dupuytren's contracture)

Dupuytren's contracture (Dupuytren's contracture) is a condition where one or more fingers bend in towards the palm of the hand so that they cannot be extended. The condition is caused by a thickening of the connective tissue in the palm of the hand and can affect one or both hands. It's not painful to have clubbing, but it can be hugely debilitating because the affected fingers can't extend. It is also hereditary and is more common in people with diabetes.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons at the wrist and in the palm of the hand become overloaded. If this happens and the tendons swell up in the root of the hand at the palm, pressure on a nerve can occur. This will manifest as a tingling, stinging and numbness in several fingers. Often there will also be discomfort and possibly pain at the wrist - especially at night.

The cause of the syndrome is usually unknown, but there is a tendency for the syndrome to occur after unaccustomed work such as painting, gardening, pregnancy or repetitive movements.

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, it's important to find the cause to see if you can change the routines that lead to the discomfort. It can resolve on its own and in some cases can be helped with a supportive wrist splint at night. If relief and a splint don't help, you can have an electrical nerve conduction study (ENG). The test is performed by placing electrodes on the index and ring fingers and wrist. Small electrical shocks are then given to both fingers and the signal is measured at the wrist. It's a bit uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt. If the examination shows that surgery is the best option for you, the surgery will involve the surgeon cutting the ligament that runs across the wrist. The ligament is not necessary for optimal wrist movement.

Tendon node (Ganglion)

A tendon knot, also called a ganglion, is a bulge of connective tissue around a joint or tendon, often on the back of the hand or at the wrist. It consists of a mucous sac with a jelly-like, fluid content that makes them feel firm and sometimes slightly elastic when touched. The condition is common and is slightly more common in women than men.

It's important to see if the knot can be relieved on its own. If relief does not have the desired effect, the tendon knot can be removed with a small surgical procedure.

Wrist surgery (arthroscopy)

At Capio Private Hospital, we perform arthroscopic wrist surgery. An arthroscopic surgery is a gentle form of surgery that makes it possible to both examine and treat many wrist problems. Our experienced specialists will assess which treatment is right for you.
