Causes of tendonitis

(De Quervain's tenosynovitis)

Tendinitis occurs when the tendon sheath on the thumb side of the wrist becomes constricted. This causes the tendons in the area to become irritated and makes it harder for them to move freely.

Symptoms of tendonitis

This condition can cause pain and discomfort in the wrist, which may affect the daily use of the hand.

Before surgery

Before your surgery, it is important that you follow the instructions you received from the hospital. If your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, you must arrive on an empty stomach.

If you are taking blood-thinning medication, you must follow the medication plan that has been established for you leading up to the surgery.

If you become ill before your surgery—for example, if you develop a fever, catch a cold, or start taking antibiotics—you should contact the hospital. The same applies if you have sores, cuts, or inflammation in the surgical area.

During the operation

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, but in some cases it may be performed under general anesthesia.

During the procedure, an incision is made in the skin, and the narrowed tendon sheath is widened to create space for the irritated tendons, which can then glide freely.

The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes.

After surgery

After the procedure, you can usually be discharged immediately if it was performed under local anesthesia. If you had general anesthesia, you will be monitored and can expect to be discharged after 1–2 hours.

It is normal to experience pain, swelling, and discomfort in your hand after the surgery. You will receive instructions on pain management before you are discharged.

It is recommended that you keep your hand elevated for the first few days after surgery to reduce swelling and promote healing. You are encouraged to move your fingers and perform exercises to achieve the best results.
