With surgery, we can fix many hip problems

At Capio Privathospital, we treat many different types of hip problems. Among other things, we perform many types of hip arthroscopies, which is a binocular operation in the hip. A hip arthroscopy can be an obvious operation to perform in cases such as joint lip damage, cartilage damage, entrapment and osteoarthritis.

We also perform hip replacements (hip arthroplasty), which is an artificial hip that can help you if your hip is so worn down that it causes severe pain and limitations. In addition, we treat other types of disorders in the hip region, including hip impingement and groin pain.

We always offer a thorough diagnosis

In many cases, hip pain can be treated and alleviated with physiotherapy and proper exercise guidance, but in some cases, surgery is the right treatment. Our experienced specialists always perform a thorough preliminary examination to ensure the best conditions for restoring your mobility and previous activity level.

Hip surgery treatments

Hip arthroscopy - Underwater surgery of the hip

A binocular surgery can be performed with great advantage in cases of joint lip injuries, entrapment syndrome or cartilage injuries. This surgery is only performed at a few locations in Denmark, including Capio Privathospital.

On this page you can read more about hip arthroscopies.

Hip arthroscopy - Joint damage

Joint damage is often caused by the joint head being more or less oval and/or the joint cavity being too deep or facing too far forward. If left untreated, there is a high risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Most often, joint damage results in groin pain. Most patients describe the pain as a sharp pain deep in the groin, but it can also cause pain in the back and side of the hip.

Examination and treatment

An examination of the hip joint using an MRI scan with an injection of contrast material into the hip joint can often clarify the diagnosis before surgery. If the joint lip is severely damaged or turned into bone, it is usually not repairable and the damaged part must be removed and a joint lip reconstruction may be considered. In the vast majority of cases, however, the joint lip can be repaired using special anchors that are inserted into the bone with sutures that secure the joint lip.

Hip arthroscopy - Joint lip reconstruction

In younger people who have had to have their joint lip removed, joint lip reconstruction may be an option. The muscle membrane (fascia) from the outside of the hip or a tendon from the knee can be used to form a new joint lip.

Hip arthroscopy - Hip ligament injury

The hip contains the largest ligament in the body at the bottom of the hip socket, and it can tear partially or completely. An arthroscopic surgery to repair the stump of the ligament will often provide pain relief. Our specialist doctors can help you decide if a revision surgery is the right option for you.

Hip arthroscopy - Mice in the hip joint

Mice in the hip joint can be caused by synovial chondromatosis, a disease of the thin synovial membrane that causes the formation of often many small cartilage mice (loose cartilage). These are usually not visible on a standard X-ray, but can cause pain and locking in the hip joint.

Mice can also form in the hip if the hip has been partially or completely dislocated.

If medical treatment and physiotherapy have not shown any beneficial effects, then a keyhole surgery may be a good option. Our surgeons will make a thorough assessment of which treatment is right for you.

Hip replacement / new hip (hip alloplasty)

Osteoarthritis is the main reason why a hip joint needs to be replaced with an artificial hip. Most often, it's people of retirement age who need a new hip, but we're also seeing more younger patients who have hip osteoarthritis requiring treatment.

You can read more about hip replacements at Capio here.

Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a condition that develops during the first few years of life and is probably genetically determined in a number of individuals.

In hip dysplasia, the hip socket is often underdeveloped in relation to the femoral head, making it appear small and thus not covering the joint head. In addition, the upper end of the femur may be abnormally angled or rotated. In these cases, unfavorable mechanical conditions arise in the hip joint. Hip dysplasia also predisposes to the development of osteoarthritis.

Examination and treatment

X-rays are often taken during the initial consultation. You will be assessed by a specialist in hip surgery who will discuss your options with you. Major hip dysplasia should be treated with a bone surgery to change the position of the joint cup. The aim of the surgery is to reduce hip pain and improve your activity level and quality of life. Not all patients will be completely pain-free and there may be clicks in the hip afterwards due to scar tissue. It will often take 6-12 months before you are fully active again.

Springhofte

Running hips can be divided into internal and external running hips. The external form is the most common, while the internal form is very rare. The cause of an external hip can be an imbalance in the muscles around the hip joint. People who are hypermobile, flat-footed or calf-kneed will have an increased risk of developing an external iliac crunch. The cause of an inner hip can be an excessive bony prominence on the pubic bone or an abnormal position of the muscle tendon attachment on the top of the femur.

The condition can usually be treated with physiotherapy or blockades. If this does not help, Capio Privathospital can offer surgical treatment. During surgery, the tight connective tissue is cut through and the underlying mucous sac is removed. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.
