Hip surgery – all treatments

With a hip replacement, you get a brand new hip

Osteoarthritis is the main reason why a hip joint needs to be replaced with an artificial hip joint. Most often, it's people of retirement age who need a new hip, but we also see more younger patients who have hip osteoarthritis requiring treatment. In many cases, the cartilage is worn down and sometimes some of the bone is also worn away, which is why a new hip is needed.

A worn hip joint is painful

Some of the typical symptoms of hip wear and tear can be pain in the hip joint, stiffness in the hip joint, pain in the groin at the end of the day after strenuous activity. In very advanced osteoarthritis, you may also experience annoying pain at rest and sleep disturbance. It's only when you have constant pain or pain that limits your walking, mobility or mobility that a hip replacement should be considered. Our experienced surgeons will assess your specific situation to ensure you receive the best possible treatment.

Insertion of a hip prosthesis

The prosthesis surgery itself typically lasts 30-60 minutes. The duration of the surgery depends on how worn the hip is and how extensive a procedure needs to be performed on the hip. Drains are no longer used during surgery as they do not have a significant effect. Once the surgery itself is over, a dressing is applied to the hip. For the best possible outcome, it is important that you mobilize as soon and as much as possible in the post-surgery period. This reduces the risks associated with the surgery.

After surgery

You should expect to be hospitalized 0-1 day after surgery and only when you meet the discharge criteria will you be discharged. During your hospitalization and after you return home, you will receive our pain package, which consists of several different types of pain management that together provide the best pain relief. During your hospitalization, a physiotherapist will work out with you, and it is important that you also exercise according to the instructions given by the physiotherapist.

Important knowledge about hip replacement

What constitutes a hip replacement?

A hip replacement consists of 3 parts made of surgical steel and polyethylene (hard plastic):

  • a part that attaches in/on the femur
  • a part that attaches to the hip socket
  • a part that attaches to the femoral prosthesis

The prosthetic parts are wedged into the bone and after about 6 weeks the bone has grown into the prosthesis. Sometimes it may be necessary to cement the prosthesis to the bone with bone cement.

The expected outcome of the surgery

The outcome of the surgery is individual, but the vast majority of patients (around 95%) are satisfied with the surgery afterwards. This means, above all, that they are pain-free and thus have a much better walking function and quality of life. The prosthesis we use at Capio is expected to last for at least 20 years for 85% of those operated on. A prosthesis can wear out and become loose, in which case it can be replaced with a new operation.
