Cruciate ligament reconstruction

Cruciate ligaments are ligaments found inside the knee joint. Their function is to support and stabilize the knee. When we need to reconstruct a cruciate ligament, it's usually performed as a telescopic operation, which means we don't open up the knee. Our surgeons are ready to provide you with thorough and specialized treatment in many locations across the country.

Spinal surgery – all treatments

We can help with ACL reconstruction

The goal of ACL reconstruction is to stabilize the knee joint. The outcome of the surgery is individual and will depend on several factors, including how long the knee joint has been loose, how many other problems there are in the knee, how the surgery itself proceeds and how the rehabilitation and aftercare process unfolds. Our experts are ready to provide you with a thorough and individual diagnosis and treatment for your problems.

The prognosis for ACL reconstruction

In general, 80% of patients who undergo ACL reconstruction are said to have a good enough result to return to their desired activity. However, there is an increased risk of twisting injuries, especially in contact sports such as handball and soccer.

Even after ACL surgery, there is a risk of developing osteoarthritis over time. If the lateral ligaments or knee capsule have become lax, looseness of the knee is to be expected after surgery. Therefore, we recommend that you maintain good musculature, as this creates more stability and thus less osteoarthritis.

ACL reconstruction - the surgery

The surgery itself

There are different types of surgery for ACL reconstruction. Common to all surgeries is a longer rehabilitation period, where you can expect to return to your previous level of activity after 6-9 months. Our experienced doctors will help you find the right treatment. If you are interested in reading more about the different types of ACL reconstruction surgeries, please refer to the respective patient information.

Before surgery

Before surgery, you will need to contact a physiotherapist who will train you after surgery. The actual rehabilitation should begin no later than 10-14 days after your surgery.

After surgery

You should exercise for about 1½ hours 2-3 times a week for 14-20 weeks after surgery. Some of the training can be done at home, in consultation with your physiotherapist. The training itself consists of strength and endurance training, coordination training and sport-specific training.

After surgery, the new ACL has no blood supply and it will take some time for blood vessels to grow into the ACL. For the first few months, the strength of the inserted ACL will be significantly weakened. It will then regain its strength again. Full strength of the ACL cannot be expected for 6-12 months. For the first 4-5 months after surgery, the ACL is weak. Therefore, apart from normal walking, you should only perform sports or other activities if your physiotherapist recommends it.
