Shoulder Replacement Surgery
The surgery itself, during which the shoulder prosthesis is implanted, lasts about 1.5 hours. The duration of the surgery depends on the extent of damage to the shoulder joint and the type of prosthesis used. During the surgery, the worn-out parts of the joint are removed and replaced with a prosthesis. To achieve the best possible outcome, it is important that you begin the recommended exercises shortly after surgery. This helps reduce the risk of complications. Movement and weight-bearing should be kept within the limits specified by the staff and your physical therapist.
After surgery
After the surgery, you will be monitored until you are fully awake, and you will be offered food and drink. Most patients are discharged the same day. You will receive a pain management plan to ensure effective pain relief in the post-operative period.
You will be given an arm sling, which you must wear around the clock for six weeks. You may remove the sling when exercising, bathing, getting dressed, and eating.
You will be shown exercises that you should begin shortly after your surgery. It is important that you follow the exercise program and stay active within the recommended guidelines, as this will have a significant impact on your recovery.
