Reconstruction of the Sternoclavicular Joint (Weaver-Dunn)

If the ligaments surrounding the acromioclavicular joint are damaged, this can lead to pain, reduced strength, and instability in the shoulder. If the symptoms cannot be alleviated with nonsurgical treatment, reconstruction of the acromioclavicular joint may be an option. The purpose of the surgery is to stabilize the clavicle and restore shoulder function.

Shoulder and elbow surgery – all treatments

We offer reconstruction of the sternoclavicular joint

Injuries to the acromioclavicular joint often occur after a fall or a direct impact to the shoulder, causing damage to the ligaments surrounding the clavicle. This can lead to pain, reduced strength, and a feeling of instability in the shoulder. If symptoms persist despite physical therapy or other non-surgical treatments, surgery may be the right solution.

Symptoms and treatment

Treatment depends on the extent of the injury and your symptoms. In cases of persistent pain and reduced function, reconstruction of the acromioclavicular joint may be recommended. The purpose of the surgery is to stabilize the clavicle by reconstructing the damaged ligaments, thereby reducing pain and improving the shoulder’s range of motion and strength. The outcome depends on the extent of the injury, and it may take up to a year to achieve the final result. About 75% of patients experience improved strength and reduced pain after surgery.

Surgery to reconstruct the acromioclavicular joint

Before the surgery, you will be examined by a specialist who will assess the injury and your symptoms. If the ligaments around the acromioclavicular joint are damaged and non-surgical treatment has not been sufficiently effective, reconstruction of the acromioclavicular joint may be the right solution. During the preoperative evaluation, the surgeon will explain the surgery and the expected course of treatment.

During the surgery, the collarbone is stabilized by transferring a ligament from the shoulder blade to the collarbone to replace the damaged ligaments. The ligament is secured with a splint and screws, which hold the collarbone in place during healing. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts about 1½ hours. The plate and screws are removed after approximately three months.

Most patients experience less pain and a stronger, more stable shoulder after surgery. Rehabilitation is an important part of treatment, and the final outcome is not assessed until up to one year later. In the initial period after surgery, a sling is used, and the shoulder is gradually rehabilitated according to an individualized exercise program.
