Surgery to repair the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder
Before the surgery, you will be examined by a specialist who will assess your symptoms and the function of your shoulder. If the injury to the rotator cuff tendons cannot be treated with non-surgical methods, surgery may be the right solution. During the preoperative evaluation, the surgeon will go over the procedure and the expected course of treatment with you.
During the surgery, the shoulder is first examined using arthroscopy through 2–3 small incisions. The injury is then assessed, and, if possible, the damaged tendon is sutured to the bone through a small incision in the shoulder region. The goal is to restore the function of the rotator cuff tendons and reduce shoulder pain. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
Most patients experience improved shoulder function and less pain after surgery. About 80% achieve better function, and nearly all experience some degree of pain relief. After surgery, a sling is worn for a period of time, and a targeted rehabilitation program is essential to achieving the best possible outcome.
