There may be various reasons for wanting to have breast implants removed. Some people no longer want implants, while others experience discomfort or changes in their breasts over time. It may also be necessary to remove the implants in cases such as capsular contracture or suspected damage to the implant.
During the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate your breasts, the placement of the implants, and the skin surrounding them. Together, you will discuss your wishes and the results you can expect after the surgery. At the same time, the surgeon will assess whether it is necessary to remove all or part of the capsule surrounding the implant.
When the implants are removed, the shape and fullness of your breasts will change. The extent to which the skin contracts afterward varies from person to person and depends, among other things, on the size of the implants, how long you’ve had them, the elasticity of your skin, and your own breast tissue.
For some women, the breasts will eventually take on a natural shape without further treatment. For others, there may be excess skin or a desire to correct the shape of the breasts. During the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon can advise on the options and assess whether, for example, a breast lift might be appropriate.
Before the surgery, you will have a preoperative consultation with the surgeon. During this consultation, you will be informed about the surgery, the expected outcome, and any complications that may arise afterward. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to the consultation.
There must be at least one week between the preliminary examination and the surgery if the procedure is considered purely cosmetic.
To ensure the best possible outcome, it is important that you follow the instructions you receive before the surgery. Among other things, you must arrive on an empty stomach on the day of the surgery and follow the plan regarding any blood-thinning medication.
In the days leading up to your surgery, you should stop taking certain types of medication and dietary supplements, as these can increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure. If you become ill, develop a fever, have a cold, or have any sores, infections, or inflammation in your body in the days leading up to your surgery, please contact the clinic as soon as possible.
The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia. On the day of the surgery, you will meet with the staff, who will explain the procedure to you and prepare you for surgery. The surgeon who will be performing the surgery will mark the surgical site, and the anesthesiologist will explain the anesthesia to you.
After the surgery, you will be monitored, and once you are sufficiently awake, you will be offered food and drink. Before you are discharged, you will be informed about how the surgery went and the important precautions you need to take afterward.
In most cases, you can be discharged 3–6 hours after the start of the procedure. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation home, and you must not drive for 24 hours after being under general anesthesia.
After the surgery, most people will experience mild pain, which usually subsides within the first week. The pain can be managed with over-the-counter medication and rest.
Adhesive strips will be applied over the surgical incisions, and a bandage will be placed over them. You will be informed about when the bandage will be removed and how to handle wearing a bra after the surgery.
To prevent complications, it is important that you start moving around as soon as possible after surgery. Once you get home, it is recommended that you stay active and not just lie or sit still.

The appearance of the breasts after surgery depends, among other things, on the size of the implants, the elasticity of the skin, the amount of natural breast tissue, and how long the implants have been in place. The skin will often tighten over the following months, but the results vary from person to person.
How long does it take to heal?
You may experience tenderness, swelling, and discoloration after the surgery. The initial changes will gradually subside, while the shape of your breasts and the scars will continue to develop over the following months. You will receive personalized guidance regarding physical activity and your post-operative care.
Will I have new scars after the surgery?
The surgeon will try, as much as possible, to use existing scars from the previous breast surgery. However, this is not always possible, and the need for new or longer incisions depends on the specific procedure. You will be informed about the location of the scars during the preoperative examination.
Can I have a breast lift at the same time as having my implants removed?
In some cases, a breast lift may be appropriate if excess skin or sagging breasts are expected after the removal. Whether the procedures should be performed at the same time is determined on a case-by-case basis during the initial consultation.
