A classic facelift removes excess skin and any excess fat and tightens the underlying muscles corresponding to the lower part of the face and neck. A facelift can remove loose skin, but it does not remove wrinkles, and the quality of the skin will therefore remain unchanged after the operation.
The ideal candidate for a facelift is a slim person aged 45-60 with loose skin, possibly with localized fat under the chin and not too many fine wrinkles. People with thick, inelastic skin are unlikely to see much difference after the operation.

Before surgery
When you arrive at the hospital, you will be assigned a bed by a nurse. The surgeon who will be operating on you will then come to greet you and, depending on the type of anesthesia, you will also be visited by an anesthesiologist. The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation (please read separate instructions for this). In the operating room, you will be given sedatives and painkillers so that you hardly notice the local anesthetic being applied. The surgery itself is painless.
The surgery itself
The surgeon makes an incision in front of and behind the ear (depending on the type of surgery). If there is excess fat on the jawline and neck, liposuction is performed. The surgeon then tightens up loose muscles and removes excess skin. The remaining skin is tightened and stitched together. A soft dressing is applied.
After surgery
For the first few hours after surgery, your heart rate, breathing, etc. will be monitored electronically and personally. The day after surgery, the dressing will be removed. Instead, a light bandage will be placed around your chin and up over your head. You can take this off and put it on as needed. Slight swelling, discoloration, tingling, numbness and tightness of the skin is normal. This will fade as the wound heals, but will disappear after 3-6 months. The stitches are removed after 5-8 days in hospital.
