The purpose of the surgery is to remove the skin lesion(s) identified during the preliminary examination. In some cases, the removed tissue is sent for examination. The cosmetic outcome depends, among other things, on the size and location of the skin lesion, and this will be discussed with the surgeon before the surgery.
Before surgery
Before the surgery, you will have a preoperative consultation with the surgeon, during which you will be informed about the procedure, the expected outcome, and possible complications. The surgeon will also assess the type of skin lesion and determine whether any additional tests are needed.
Depending on the type of skin lesion to be removed, a consultation with a dermatologist or a biopsy may be necessary before the procedure in some cases, while in others it is not required. This will be determined during the preoperative evaluation.
The surgery itself
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, but in some cases may be performed under general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. The duration varies depending on the size of the skin lesion and how many lesions need to be removed. During the procedure, the affected skin lesion is removed, and the area is closed with sutures. On the day of the surgery, you will meet staff who will inform you about the procedure and prepare you for surgery, as well as the surgeon, who will go over the procedure with you and mark the surgical site.
After surgery
After the surgery, you can usually be discharged the same day. It is normal to experience mild pain and tenderness, which can be treated with over-the-counter medication. The surgical incision is covered with adhesive strips, and the sutures are removed later or dissolve on their own, depending on the type. There may be some minor bleeding, swelling, and discoloration in the area, which usually subsides within the first few days.
To promote healing, it is recommended that you keep the area still and, as much as possible, elevated above heart level during the first few days. You can usually resume daily activities quickly, but should avoid strenuous movements in the area for 10–14 days. The scar will initially be visible and reddish, but will gradually fade over time. In some cases, the removed tissue is sent for examination, and the turnaround time can be up to approximately 14 days.
