Scars develop differently from person to person and can vary in size, color, texture, and location. Some scars become less visible over time, while others may remain noticeable or cause discomfort.
During a preliminary consultation, the plastic surgeon will assess the scar’s location, appearance, and the quality of your skin. Together, you’ll discuss your goals and what can realistically be achieved with scar revision.
The goal of the treatment is not necessarily to completely remove the scar, but to make it less visible and help it blend in better with the surrounding skin.

Before scar revision surgery, you will have a preliminary consultation with a plastic surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon will assess, among other things, the scar’s location, size, appearance, and the quality of the skin.
You’ll discuss your concerns and expectations for the outcome, and the plastic surgeon will determine which treatment is appropriate. You’ll also receive information about the procedure itself, the expected outcome, and the post-operative recovery period.
If the surgery is performed solely for cosmetic reasons, there must be a minimum of one week between the preliminary examination and the surgery.
How scar revision is performed depends on the type and location of the scar. In surgical scar revision, scar tissue is removed or loosened, after which the skin is closed with the goal of creating a more discreet scar.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. In some cases, general anesthesia may be appropriate, depending on the extent of the surgery. The location of the incision and the specific technique used are tailored to each individual.
After the surgery, you may experience tenderness, swelling, and possibly discoloration around the treated area. You will receive instructions on how to care for the scar and information on when you can return to work and other activities.
As a general rule, the water-resistant adhesive strips should remain in place until the stitches are removed. You can usually take a shower the day after the surgery, but you should avoid baths, swimming pools, and seawater for 14 days.
Avoid vigorous movements in the area where the surgery was performed for 10–14 days. Swelling and discoloration usually subside within 2–3 weeks.
Can a scar from a C-section be corrected?
In some cases, a scar from a cesarean section can be corrected if, for example, it is wide, uneven, tight, or otherwise bothersome. During a preliminary examination, the plastic surgeon will assess the scar and the surrounding skin and advise you on the options for scar correction.
Can old surgical scars be treated?
It may be possible to correct an older surgical scar, but this depends, among other things, on the scar’s location, appearance, and nature. The plastic surgeon will assess on a case-by-case basis whether scar revision can improve the scar’s appearance or reduce any discomfort.
When is a scar ready for scar correction?
Scars change during the healing process and may become both lighter in color and less noticeable over time. Therefore, the decision as to when a scar has matured sufficiently to warrant surgical correction is made on a case-by-case basis.
Will I have a new scar after scar revision?
Yes. With surgical scar revision, a scar will still remain after the procedure. The goal is to create better conditions so that the new scar heals more discreetly than the original one.
Can scar correction help with a tight scar?
If a scar is tight or affects the surrounding skin, scar correction may be an option in some cases. This depends, among other things, on the scar’s location and extent, and therefore an individual assessment is necessary.
What's the best way to care for my scar after surgery?
After the surgery, you will receive instructions on wound and scar care. As a general rule, it is recommended that you use a bandage strip over the scar for three months and protect the scar from the sun with clothing or sunscreen during the first year.
