Treatment of Both the Upper and Lower Eyelids

Before eyelid surgery, you will have a preliminary examination with the plastic surgeon. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member to the preliminary examination. Here you will be informed about the surgery, late effects and possible complications. The plastic surgeon will also inform you about the expected cosmetic result.
At least one week must pass from the preliminary examination to the surgery if the procedure is considered purely cosmetic.
The procedure takes about one hour per upper and lower eyelid and is typically performed under local anesthesia. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, which may be supplemented with pain medication and sedatives administered through an IV.
Heavy upper eyelids

If you only have bags under the eyes without excess skin, the incision is made in the mucous membrane of the lower eyelid so that you do not scar the skin. Excess fat is removed and the wound heals spontaneously without stitches.
You will need to stay at the hospital for ½ to 1 hour after the surgery, during which time ice packs will be placed on your eyes to prevent swelling. After lower eyelid surgery, most patients experience double vision for the first few hours. This is due to the local anesthesia and is temporary.
A small amount of bloody discharge from the surgical wound is normal. There may be transient redness of the eyelid and you may have a bluish discoloration around the eyes for 2-3 weeks.
As a general rule, you can return to work after about one week, depending on the nature of your work. You must not wear contact lenses for 14 days after the surgery. You may wear makeup approximately 14 days after the surgery.
In principle, the result is permanent, but ongoing age changes can lead to the desire for a second operation 5-10 years after the first.
