The treatment process

Before surgery

Before eyelid surgery, you will have a preliminary examination with the plastic surgeon. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member to the preliminary examination. Here you will be informed about the surgery, late effects and possible complications. The plastic surgeon will also inform you about the expected cosmetic result.

At least one week must pass from the preliminary examination to the surgery if the procedure is considered purely cosmetic.

During surgery

The surgery takes about an hour and is typically performed under local anesthesia. You may also be offered a sedative.

Heavy upper eyelids

The incision is made in the globe line. Remove excess skin, muscle and fat. Sew the tissue together with a thin nylon thread. A narrow strip of plaster is placed on top.

Bags under the eyes

If there is excess fat and plenty of skin, the incision is made along the lash line and excess skin, muscle and fat are removed. Sew the tissue with a few nylon threads. A narrow strip of plaster is placed on top of this. If excess skin and fat are located towards the cheek, the incision is made here.

If you only have bags under the eyes without excess skin, the incision is made in the mucous membrane of the lower eyelid so that you do not scar the skin. Excess fat is removed and the wound heals spontaneously without stitches.

After surgery

You'll need to stay in the hospital for ½-1 hour after surgery, where you'll have ice packs placed on your eyes to prevent swelling. After lower eyelid surgery, it is not uncommon to experience double vision for the first few hours after surgery. This is due to the local anesthetic.

A small amount of bloody discharge from the surgical wound is normal. There may be transient redness of the eyelid and you may have a bluish discoloration around the eyes for 2-3 weeks.

You can return to work 2-8 days after surgery. Do not wear contact lenses for 14 days after surgery. Makeup can be applied approximately 14 days after surgery.

In principle, the result is permanent, but ongoing age changes can lead to the desire for a second operation 5-10 years after the first.
