After the surgery, your body needs time to heal. You can expect swelling, tenderness, and a feeling of tightness around your abdomen at first.
As a general rule, you must be hospitalized for at least one day, and you can usually expect to be discharged the following morning. You must arrange your own transportation home and are not permitted to drive yourself home.
After the surgery, you will be given an abdominal support belt, which you will normally need to wear around the clock for 3–6 months, depending on the extent of the surgery. You will also receive instructions on wound care, physical activity, and your post-operative care. How soon you can return to work, exercise, and your normal activities depends, among other things, on the extent of the surgery and your healing progress.
Scars are visible after abdominoplasty, but they gradually change as the area heals. The final result develops over time, and it may take up to 12 months before the result can be assessed. The result is expected to last for many years, but may be affected by factors such as aging, smoking, and weight changes. It is therefore recommended to maintain a stable weight.
