Is obesity dangerous?

As well as affecting your mental wellbeing and having negative social consequences, being overweight can also increase your risk of a number of diseases and conditions.

If you are overweight with a BMI above 30, it is referred to as obesity and you can gradually develop symptoms and complications in the form of other diseases. Examples of such complications are type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, certain cancers, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea.

Your risk of serious complications increases significantly the higher your BMI:

Capio doctors ready to treat obesity

Why does it make sense to treat obesity?

Many people have struggled with obesity and overweight for many years. Various treatments and diets have been tried without being able to maintain lasting weight loss. In addition, many people find that they quickly gain weight back after dieting, often with a few extra pounds.

Large international studies have shown that patients who lose morbid obesity live longer, get rid of their co-morbidities completely or significantly better, and most have a better quality of life than similar untreated patients.

Benefits:

  • Significant weight loss: Most people lose 5-15% quickly
  • Better control of type 2 diabetes
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Less sleep apnea (interrupted sleep)
  • Less joint pain
  • Better mobility
  • Improved fertility (women)
  • Improved sex life
  • Improved quality of life
  • Increased lifespan

Can you benefit from weight loss treatment?

If you have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight several times and are suffering from obesity, we are ready to help you. In order to receive weight loss surgery or medical treatment for obesity at Capio, you must be a paying patient. You can book a preliminary consultation with our team to discuss whether weight loss surgery is the right choice for you, or if any of our other obesity treatment options are more suitable.

Weight loss surgery (sleeve and bypass)

Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) is the most advanced and effective treatment for obesity that can provide lifelong results. This treatment requires that you also get help with lasting lifestyle changes, which is why Capio offers you a range of experts to support and help you before and after surgery.

Obesity rates are rising across the Western world, reducing quality of life and increasing the risk of complications and death. The proportion of extremely obese (BMI > 40kg/m2) in Denmark is approaching 20% of the adult population and countless studies have shown that lasting weight loss in obese people is extremely difficult with methods such as diet, exercise, training and even long-term dietician treatment. Obesity can therefore be described as a serious chronic condition.

If you have a BMI between 30 and 35, an individual assessment will be made to determine if surgery is appropriate. During the consultation, Capio's experts can answer any questions you may have about your obesity and what treatment is best for you. For some people, medical weight loss treatment can be a good alternative to surgery.

In the long term, bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment available for morbid obesity and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol. In addition, bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective against the development of certain types of cancer and contributes to an extended lifespan compared to non-surgical treatment methods.

Pre-examination (mandatory) is performed by an endocrinologist where your blood tests and other health conditions are assessed to determine if you are suitable for surgery.

You will then have a consultation with the surgeon and dietician. You will talk to the surgeon about the surgery itself and what you can expect from the overall process.

Once you have made a plan for your surgery in consultation with your surgeon and dietitian, the final surgery date is agreed upon.

In connection with the surgery, you will be hospitalized for 24 hours. After about a week, you will receive a call from a nurse who can help answer any questions you may have.

Upon discharge, you will be given a diet plan by the dietician, who will also follow you for up to 3 years after surgery.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve has become the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the UK and is a procedure where the stomach is made smaller while preserving the normal passage and anatomy. The surgery allows you to feel full sooner and you can expect to lose up to 80% of your excess weight.

The surgery is performed via telescopic surgery and you are hospitalized with us until the following day.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery helps you lose weight by changing how your stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat. A gastric bypass is a combination of a small stomach pouch and a partial bypass of the upper part of the small intestine. This affects how quickly you feel full and reduces the absorption of parts of the diet from the intestine. You can expect to lose up to 80% of your excess weight.

The surgery is performed via telescopic surgery and you are hospitalized with us until the following day.

Medical treatment of obesity

Medical treatment of obesity

Medical treatments that have a noticeable effect on obesity are developing rapidly.

The most effective drugs are GLP-1 analogs, which were originally developed for diabetes treatment but also alter satiety and cravings. It mimics the body's own hunger and satiety regulating hormone GLP-1. The medication is taken by the patient as an injection (similar to insulin) once a day or week (depending on the type) and provides a weight loss of 5-20% of total body weight when combined with dietician guidance and lifestyle changes.

The dose is adjusted in collaboration with our doctor based on the effect and any side effects.

Back surgery at Capio

I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.

Hip replacement surgery

I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13th at Capio Aalborg and despite the circumstances, I had a good stay where I got answers to all my questions. I met a staff with great competence and empathy, so I can only give my best recommendations.
Thank you very much for everything.
