Sterilization is generally irreversible, so it's important to decide whether you want children in the future or more children if you already have some. All men over 25 who have permanent residence in Denmark can be sterilized. Men between 18 and 25 must apply for sterilization. When you come to us for the procedure, it is important that you bring a consent form with you. You can get the consent form from your general practitioner. The consent form ensures that you are aware of the consequences of the procedure before we perform it.
Sterilization does not affect your ability to ejaculate or achieve orgasm. The only change is that there will no longer be sperm in your seminal fluid when you ejaculate, and therefore the amount of seminal fluid will also be only marginally less. Since sterilization does not affect your production of sex hormones, you will still produce sperm, but they will just be absorbed into your body.
How does sterilization work?
Male sterilization is a short procedure under local anaesthesia via small incisions in the scrotum, where the vas deferens is cut and the ends are closed, as shown in the illustration below. The procedure prevents sperm from passing through the vas deferens and reaching the urethra, which means that the seminal fluid will no longer contain sperm. As a result, the man loses the ability to make a woman pregnant. The procedure does not affect the man's hormone production or his ability to achieve ejaculation and orgasm.
Are there health risks associated with sterilization?
Some studies have shown a 15% increased incidence of prostate cancer in sterilized men. However, as there are also studies that do not show a correlation, it is too difficult to conclude with certainty that sterilization increases the risk of prostate cancer.
