Weight loss surgery
Weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) is the most advanced and effective treatment for obesity that can provide lifelong results. This treatment requires that you also get help with lasting lifestyle changes, which is why Capio offers you a range of experts to support and help you before and after surgery.
Obesity rates are rising across the Western world, reducing quality of life and increasing the risk of complications and death. The proportion of extremely obese (BMI > 40kg/m2) in Denmark is approaching 20% of the adult population and countless studies have shown that lasting weight loss in obese people is extremely difficult with methods such as diet, exercise, training and even long-term dietician treatment. Obesity can therefore be described as a serious chronic condition.
If you have a BMI between 30 and 35, an individual assessment will be made to determine if surgery is appropriate. During the consultation, Capio's experts can answer any questions you may have about your obesity and what treatment is best for you. For some people, medical weight loss treatment can be a good alternative to surgery.
In the long term, bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment available for morbid obesity and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol. In addition, bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective against the development of certain types of cancer and contributes to an extended lifespan compared to non-surgical treatment methods.
Pre-examination (mandatory) is performed by an endocrinologist where your blood tests and other health conditions are assessed to determine if you are suitable for surgery.
You will then have a consultation with the surgeon and dietician. You will talk to the surgeon about the surgery itself and what you can expect from the overall process.
Once you have made a plan for your surgery in consultation with your surgeon and dietitian, the final surgery date is agreed upon.
In connection with the surgery, you will be hospitalized for 24 hours. After about a week, you will receive a call from a nurse who can help answer any questions you may have.
Upon discharge, you will be given a diet plan by the dietician, who will also follow you for up to 3 years after surgery.
Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery helps you lose weight by changing how your stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat. A gastric bypass is a combination of a small stomach pouch and a partial bypass of the upper part of the small intestine. This affects how quickly you feel full and reduces the absorption of parts of the diet from the intestine. You can expect to lose up to 80% of your excess weight.
The surgery is performed via telescopic surgery and you are hospitalized with us until the following day.
