Ultrasound (sound waves) can create detailed images of the body's internal organs, blood vessels, muscles, tendons and joints. Ultrasound works on the same principles as sonar in a boat, but instead sends sound waves into the body and captures the echoes of the sound. To create these sound waves, special transducers (sound heads) are used during an ultrasound scan.
