What is COPD?

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a common lung disease in which there is a slow destruction of lung tissue, often combined with coughing and mucus production. The main symptom is shortness of breath on exertion, and in severe COPD, shortness of breath can also occur with very little exertion and even at rest. Respiratory infections can cause repeated acute exacerbations of the patient's COPD, which may require treatment in a hospital.

What causes COPD?

Tobacco smoking is the most common cause of COPD, and therefore the condition is most commonly seen in smokers or former smokers. However, patients who have never smoked have also been known to develop the disease.

Can COPD be cured?

COPD is a chronic lung condition that cannot be cured. Once lung tissue is destroyed, it cannot be recovered, which is why it's important to get the right treatment started as early as possible.

How can COPD be treated?

COPD cannot be cured, but there are various ways to alleviate the symptoms, thereby improving the patient's quality of life and preventing exacerbations. Treatment includes smoking cessation, physical exercise, counseling and medication.
