Phimosis can also occur later in life as a result of, for example, diabetes or skin diseases. It manifests itself as a tightening when the foreskin is pulled away from the head of the penis. Sometimes it can be difficult to pull back the foreskin at all. The condition can lead to infection, which manifests as redness, swelling and soreness of the foreskin. There may also be problems with pain during intercourse. If the foreskin is particularly tight, it can even block urination.

You will be invited to a preliminary examination with one of our urologists before we perform surgery. Here, the doctor will assess the degree of your phimosis so that the surgery can be planned in the best possible way and so that you feel informed and involved in the process.

The surgery lasts approx. 60 minutes. and you will have agreed with your doctor in advance whether the surgery will be performed under local or general anesthesia. If the foreskin can be pulled back over the head of the penis, the problem can often be solved with minor plastic surgery of the foreskin. This procedure does not require the removal of any of the foreskin.

In cases where the foreskin cannot be retracted at all, the surgeon must remove part or all of the foreskin and perform a so-called circumcision. During the procedure, the surgeon cuts all the way around and removes the narrow part, after which the edges of the skin are sewn with many small knots. The wound is stitched with dissolvable thread.

When can I return to work?

There is usually no need for sick leave in connection with the procedure.

Are there any special precautions for the surgery?

You are not allowed to smoke on the day of surgery. We generally recommend that you refrain from smoking two weeks before and two weeks after surgery, as smoking reduces blood circulation in the tissue and oxygen levels in the blood. This inhibits wound healing and increases the risk of infection in the surgical wounds.

When can I have intercourse after surgery?

You can have intercourse approximately three weeks after the procedure or until the wound has healed and the stitches have fallen off.

Which anaesthetic should I have?

Phimosis surgery is performed under both local anesthesia and general anesthesia. It will be discussed with the respective doctor which anesthesia is best for your case.
