Is your daughter vaccinated? The debate about side effects of the HPV vaccine makes it easy to have doubts! However, there are no scientific studies that suggest that the HPV vaccine has more or more serious side effects than other childhood vaccines. Here, our gynecologists talk about HPV vaccination for young girls - and boys.
Facts:
Both the Danish Health Authority and the Danish Cancer Society recommend that girls are vaccinated. The vaccination is part of the childhood vaccination program and is recommended for girls aged 12 years. Girls between the ages of 12 and 17 are vaccinated free of charge by their own doctor.
How much does the vaccine protect?
Cervical cancer and cervical cell changes are caused by infection with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). The vast majority of HPV infections resolve on their own, but in some cases the infection can develop into cervical cell changes and later cervical cancer.
There are three HPV vaccines, two of which protect against the two most common types of HPV - HPV types 16 and 18 - which are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer and cervical cancer cases. A new and third vaccine has just been launched that protects against nine different HPV types. This means that the vaccine protects against 85-90% of all cases of cell changes and cervical cancer. This vaccine also protects against genital warts, just like one of the two previous vaccines.
As none of the vaccines offer 100% protection against cervical cancer, it's important to keep up with your screening. Cervical cancer screening is offered to all women between the ages of 23 and 65.
Can boys be vaccinated?
Yes. The vaccine is approved for boys and men and can prevent cancer and precancerous lesions of the rectum (anal cancer).
So far, boys are not offered free HPV vaccination in Denmark. This is because the number of HPV-related cancers that the vaccine is approved to prevent is relatively low among men - fewer than 50 men are diagnosed with anal cancer annually.
HPV vaccination probably also protects against cancers of the mouth and throat, but the vaccine is not yet approved for this.
