Hernia surgery
At Capio, we offer surgery for three different types of hernias: umbilical hernia, inguinal hernia and abdominal wall hernia. Hernias can be operated on using a telescopic technique rather than open surgery, although in some cases open surgery is the only and/or best option.
Open surgery or telescopic surgery
With telescopic surgery, there is less chronic discomfort after surgery and the risk of hernia recurrence is lower than with traditional open surgery. In many cases, the pain is also less, so you can quickly get back to your normal activities. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts 1 hour. Once you have been anesthetized, 3 small telescopic tubes are inserted through the abdominal wall into the abdominal cavity. The tubes have a diameter of ½-1 cm and this is where the surgery is performed.
In a telescopic operation, a plastic mesh is inserted over the defect on the inside of the abdominal wall, whereas in an open operation, the mesh is placed on the outside of the defect. The mesh is placed behind the peritoneum and does not come into contact with the intestines. Open hernia surgery is performed through an incision in the abdomen, after which the hernia is inserted back into the abdominal cavity.
