What is shin splints?
Shin splints occur when the muscles in the shin have been overloaded. The overuse causes the tendon attachment between the muscle and bone to become irritated and inflamed, triggering the characteristic pain.
Rest, relief and stretching
Once the injury has occurred, there's a lot you can do. Firstly, you need to rest your muscles, so try another form of exercise - such as cycling - and make sure you stretch out the sore muscles. Once the discomfort has started to subside, you can slowly start running again. Make sure you have the right running shoes with the right shock absorption and support.
Recurrent inflammatory conditions
If you suffer from this condition over and over again, it's likely that you have an imbalance in your movement pattern, resulting in a skewed load on your lower legs. Our physiotherapists can help with an individual examination and guidance for your specific problem.
In very rare cases, surgery may be considered if other treatments have not had a satisfactory effect after 6 months.
