Knee replacement

A knee replacement can help you where the cartilage, and perhaps even some of the bone, in your knee has worn down. The surgery will alleviate or minimize the pain caused by the wear and tear, giving you greater mobility and increased activity levels, all of which contribute to a better quality of life. Our highly specialized surgeons work responsibly and with dedication to help you with a thorough diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of your knee.

High patient satisfaction

With us, you'll only meet experienced experts

A knee replacement is a good, long-term treatment for the discomfort and pain associated with a worn-out knee. However, the surgery is a major procedure and is therefore not performed until the patient is in constant pain or if the pain limits walking, mobility or mobility. It's also important that you have tried painkillers or arthritis medication before surgery, but it hasn't worked sufficiently.

What is a knee replacement?

A knee prosthesis is an artificial knee made from surgical steel and polyethylene (hard plastic) that is attached to the bone using bone cement. A total knee replacement consists of 3 parts; one part that attaches to the femur, one part that attaches to the tibia and one part that attaches to the patella. If the knee is only partially worn, it is also possible to have a partial knee replacement. After the preliminary examination, our doctors will assess which treatment is right for you. In some cases, however, the surgeon will change his or her mind during the surgery itself, where the cartilage conditions of the entire knee can be assessed more accurately.

Knee replacement - the surgery

Expected results of the surgery

Our knee surgery team aims for you to be completely pain-free, but we can't guarantee it, as the outcome of the surgery will always be individual. The prosthesis we use is expected to last for a minimum of 20 years. This is true for 85% of patients who have a knee replacement, but in some cases the prosthesis can wear out and become loose. In these cases, it can be replaced with a new operation.

Before surgery

You must arrive at the hospital at the agreed time, fasting. The surgery typically lasts 60-90 minutes, depending on how the knee looks and how extensive the procedure is. Before surgery, you will be given an anesthetic, usually a spinal anesthetic, but you can choose to sleep or listen to music if you don't want to be awake during surgery.

The surgery itself

Depending on the type of prosthesis, you may have a so-called blood-tightness cuff placed on your thigh during surgery, which is inflated during the operation so that you do not lose any blood at all. Bleeding may occur after the surgery. In total prosthesis surgery, a blood loss cuff is rarely used; in partial prosthesis surgery, it is always used. You will often have deep thigh pain 1-2 days after surgery if a cuff has been used. When the surgery is over, a bandage is applied to the knee.

After surgery

During the surgery, a large amount of local anesthesia will be placed around your knee, which means you will be well relieved of pain when the anesthesia in your back wears off. You should expect to be hospitalized 0-1 day after surgery. During hospitalization and after you return home, you will receive our pain package, which consists of several different types of pain management that together provide the best pain relief.

During your hospitalization, a physiotherapist will exercise with you, but it is important that you also exercise according to the instructions given by the physiotherapist. An ice cuff will be available during your hospitalization to relieve knee pain with ice water.

Once you are discharged, you will be offered an outpatient check-up with your surgeon after 3 months and you will need to book an appointment with your GP 3 weeks after surgery for the removal of the small clips that are placed in the skin. You will also be called in for outpatient rehabilitation in your municipality.

Back surgery at Capio

I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.

Hip replacement surgery

I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13th at Capio Aalborg and despite the circumstances, I had a good stay where I got answers to all my questions. I met a staff with great competence and empathy, so I can only give my best recommendations.
Thank you very much for everything.
