Rotator cuff treatment
Until now, there has been a very wait-and-see approach to rotator cuff surgery, but the technique has improved and the general recommendation today is to operate on the injury in patients under the age of about 65, while older patients should initially try blockades and physiotherapy. Today, rotator cuff surgery can almost always be performed using a telescopic technique (a shoulder arthroscopy), but in rare cases it may be necessary to perform open shoulder surgery. The surgery is always followed by long-term rehabilitation.
The aim of the surgery is to restore function in the shoulder, primarily to provide pain relief, but also to restore good mobility. However, power across the shoulder rarely improves after surgery. Prior to surgery, an X-ray examination and an MRI scan must be performed.
